What socialization is (and what it isn't)
Socialization means introducing your puppy to a variety of new things in a positive way — helping them feel comfortable and adapt to each new experience.
Exposure alone is not socialization. The goal is for your puppy to become comfortable and accustomed to new things — not just to encounter them.
So what does improper socialization look like? Dogs who haven't been properly socialized tend to be shy and over-reactive. That reactive behavior happens because the puppy was never positively exposed to environmental stimuli. Fearful puppies might flinch, freeze, or withdraw when petted. They might startle easily at things considered routine — loud sounds, moving bikes, automatic doors, people of different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities.
The critical window: 7 to 16 weeks
- Critical period: research shows that puppies between 7 and 16 weeks old have a unique opportunity to learn and accept new things.
- Closing window: this period ends around 16 weeks — which is why we stress the importance of socialization now.
According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), inadequate socialization can lead to behavior problems and even severe issues later in life.
