Course 7 · THE DOG BUSINESS MBA

Owner, not worker

Two people, same schedule, different lives

Two dog walkers can run the exact same week — same dogs, same hours, same neighborhood. Five years later, one has an asset she could sell and a calendar she controls. The other has a job that happens to involve dogs, and is more tired than when they started. The difference was never the work. It was the stance.

The worker vs the owner

A worker takes whatever clients show up, apologizes for the price, and treats the business as a series of transactions. An owner decides what the business does and does not do, sets the price and holds it, and treats the business as an asset they are building — not a job they are doing.

You can be the owner from day one, with zero clients. It is a decision, not a milestone you earn later.

Spot the difference

job

The worker says

"I charge a bit less than the others so I can win the client." "I'll take any dog — I need the money." "I can't raise prices, people will leave."

asset

The owner says

"I charge what the service is worth and attract the clients who value it." "I take the dogs that fit my pack and refer the rest." "I raise prices on new clients first and prove the value."

Vision vs goalThe owner's first tool

A goal is a number — "ten clients by month six." A vision is a state — "I serve a steady roster of working professionals who trust me with their dogs, my schedule is mine, and I've built something I could hand off." You aim at goals. You live in visions. Decide the vision first; the goals become the steps toward it.

Standards run the business when you're not there

Rules are reactions to broken things. Standards are decisions you make before anything is broken — what the company does whether you're awake or asleep, week one or year five. "I confirm every booking in writing." "I never walk a dog I haven't assessed." "Invoices go out on the 1st." Standards are how a business runs without living in your head.

Write your standards down. A standard you haven't written is just a good intention.

Your turn

Write one sentence of vision — the state you're building toward, not a number. Then write three standards you'll hold from day one. These go on your Foundation one-sheet.
