Boston parks require a leash outside the designated off-leash areas, and the maximum length is 8 feet. Dogs are banned outright from tot lots, play areas, sandboxes and ball fields — those aren't leash-required zones, they're no-dog zones, and walking a pack across one is a different problem from walking it off-leash.

Two state requirements sit behind every Boston dog. MGL c.140 §137 requires the owner or keeper of a dog over six months to license it, with a tag displaying the licence number worn on the collar or harness — and the licensing authority checks vaccination before issuing. MGL c.140 §145B requires rabies vaccination by a licensed vet for any dog six months or older, with violations carrying fines to $100. As the walker, confirm both before the first walk — you're the one Animal Control speaks to if a dog is picked up or involved in an incident.
